Coming back from Wrath of the Lich King (2008-2010): what changed
The systems that changed for everyone
Level 60 is the cap — and there is no planned increase, no level scaling, no flying (wf-0006).
What will surprise you:
- Your WotLK 80 would be a god here. Everyone starts at 1 on Nov 4 (wf-0037 applies to reservation characters too).
What will feel familiar:
- Azeroth, factions, capitals and the 1-60 journey shape are the world you left.
- Classes still wear the three-tree structure you know (wf-0106).
There is no realm list and no realm choice: Forever is realmless. You pick a ruleset — Normal, PvP, RP or RP-PvP (wf-0067).
What will surprise you:
- On the PvP ruleset your account is one faction only, and creation for an over-populated faction can be throttled (wf-0073, wf-0074).
- Battlegrounds are the ONLY cross-ruleset play (wf-0069).
What will feel familiar:
- Your ruleset is still your home for grouping, dungeons and raids (wf-0068).
Every character has a first AND a last name. Only the full combination must be unique in your region (wf-0027).
What will surprise you:
- The single-name land-grab you remember is dead: someone else can share your first name. Your FULL name is your identity.
- Early Name Reservation (Oct 27 - Nov 3) covers at most 3 characters per account, pack owners only (wf-0033, wf-0035).
What will feel familiar:
- You can share a surname across all your alts — the guild-family move (wf-0029).
Honor is a spendable currency (wf-0155), and a 14-rank PvP ladder with gear-token rewards is back (wf-0158).
What will surprise you:
- Epic PvP pieces are upgrades: the blue piece plus an Emboldened Seal, and Seals have rank requirements (wf-0159).
- There is a PvP Season Journey of weekly tasks paying Honor and Rank Points (wf-0161).
What will feel familiar:
- Spending Honor on gear is a WotLK habit too — the difference is the rank ladder bolted onto it.
- Rank titles from the old ladder (up to 14) are live progression again (wf-0119).
The launch battleground is brand new: Battle for the Darkspear Islands, 15v15, levels 30-60 — hold 4 capture points, run the central flag to a base you control, first to 2,000 (wf-0149, wf-0153).
What will surprise you:
- You queue at battlemasters in any capital, or at the faction bases in the Barrens (wf-0154).
What will feel familiar:
- 15v15 points-and-flag play will feel like home to anyone who ran Alterac or Arathi seriously.
No raids at launch. All three launch raids unlock December 9, 2026: Barrow Deeps (10), Hyjal Summit (20), Onyxia's Lair (40) (wf-0174, wf-0175, wf-0176).
What will surprise you:
- Launch month is leveling, dungeons and battlegrounds — the raid race starts Dec 9, so a late start is recoverable.
- Onyxia is back at 40-player size, attunement and all (wf-0177).
What will feel familiar:
- Fixed-size raid rosters and weekly resets are the rhythm you know — the sizes are 10/20/40 here.
Six race/class combinations that were impossible in WotLK: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, Undead Paladin (wf-0088).
What will surprise you:
- Dwarf Shaman is the ONLY Alliance Shaman; Undead Paladin is the ONLY Horde Paladin (wf-0080, wf-0086).
- There are no Blood Elves, Draenei, Goblins or Worgen in Forever at all (wf-0089).
What will feel familiar:
- Every class exists on both factions now — no more faction envy (wf-0088).
Dual Specialization exists and unlocks at level 40 (wf-0109) — two specs maximum, respecs at a class trainer in a major city.
What will surprise you:
- The exact cost is UNKNOWN — the corpus says so outright (wf-0110). Budget like it matters.
What will feel familiar:
- Dual spec as a concept is a WotLK invention you already know how to use.
Talents are rebuilt, not modernized: 51 points at 60, gold milestone talents at 11/21/31 plus a new milestone at 16, and former talent buffs (Divine Spirit, Blessing of Kings) are baseline (wf-0106).
What will surprise you:
- Blizzard's stated goal: all 27 trees viable in dungeons and raids, none mandatory — and weaknesses are kept on purpose (wf-0105).
What will feel familiar:
- Three trees per class, one point per level from 10 — the grammar is WotLK's (wf-0106).
One new race: the Skyborne, playable on both factions — and locked behind owning the Heroic Pack or higher (wf-0089, wf-0092).
What will surprise you:
- Horde Skyborne (Windshapers) get Shaman; Alliance Skyborne (High Order) get Mage (wf-0087).
What will feel familiar:
- Their home continent story feeds straight into the zones you know.

Your Druid delta: Wrath of the Lich King (2008-2010) → Forever
Berserk, Wild Growth and Eclipse headline your trees (wf-0114) — the hybrid premium is intact: Druid is still the only class in the tank AND healer lists at once (wf-0104).
WotLK's four-role shapeshifter was already Forever-shaped; the trees get named headline tools without losing the one-class-every-role identity (wf-0114).
What will surprise you:
- All 27 classes' trees are designed to be viable — off-meta Bear or Boomkin picks are a stated design goal, not a trap (wf-0105).
What will feel familiar:
- Form-shifting across tank, healer, caster and cat/bear roles in one class.
- The only class that could do everything in WotLK still can (wf-0104).

Your Hunter delta: Wrath of the Lich King (2008-2010) → Forever
Aimed Shot is just taught to you at level 20 now — no talent points — and Survival has a real melee toolkit instead of a side-show (wf-0114).
From WotLK's mana-burning ranged specialist (mana is an era-side memory; the corpus does not carry Forever's resource details, so we do not claim them) to Forever's cleaner trainer-taught kit — the fantasy is the same, the homework is less.
What will surprise you:
- A Lone Wolf-style Marksmanship option is reported — a petless Hunter build, which WotLK never offered (wf-0114, as reported by the corpus).
- Humans can be Hunters now — one of the six new combinations (wf-0079).
What will feel familiar:
- Pet out, you at range: the leveling loop WotLK hunters know is the corpus's explicit solo recommendation (wf-0104).
- Marksmanship still ends in a signature long shot — Sniper Shot now (wf-0114).

Your Mage delta: Wrath of the Lich King (2008-2010) → Forever
Arcane Blast, Ice Lance and Heating Up enter the trees (wf-0113) — Forever's Mage pulls signature tools from several eras into one Classic-structured kit.
WotLK's specialist caster keeps its schools; Forever layers in tools from across the class's whole history (wf-0113) rather than modernizing the chassis (wf-0105).
What will surprise you:
- Orcs can be Mages — one of the six new combinations (wf-0083).
- Heating Up gives Fire its proc-driven rhythm inside a Classic frame (wf-0113).

Your Paladin delta: Wrath of the Lich King (2008-2010) → Forever
Paladin is the single biggest rework in Forever (wf-0112): Holy Strike at level 6, Seals are no longer consumed by Judgement, Protection gets a tank seal whose Judgement taunts, and Consecration is baseline at 20.
WotLK's Paladin was three specs sharing one seal-juggling minigame; Forever's is the most-rebuilt class in the game (wf-0112) — plate support with a genuine tank seal and a strike of its own, and for Horde players, an entirely new door: the Undead Paladin (wf-0086).
What will surprise you:
- Blessing of Kings no longer costs talent points — it is baseline (wf-0106).
- If you are Horde, your WotLK Blood Elf Paladin has no direct heir: Forever's Horde Paladin is the Undead, and it is the ONLY Horde Paladin (wf-0086, wf-0088).
What will feel familiar:
- Seals, Judgement, blessings and the bubble: the identity survived the rework (wf-0112).
- The same deliberate weaknesses survived too — no interrupt, no slow (wf-0105).

Your Priest delta: Wrath of the Lich King (2008-2010) → Forever
Divine Spirit is baseline now — the tax is gone — and Discipline gains Penance and Divine Aegis while Holy gains Prayer of Mending (wf-0113, wf-0106).
WotLK's Priest was the healer with a talent tax on its identity (Divine Spirit lived in the Discipline tree); Forever refunds the tax (wf-0106) and hardens Discipline into a real shield-and-Penance spec (wf-0113).
What will surprise you:
- Shadow Word: Death is baseline for Shadow (wf-0113).
- Gnomes can be Priests now — one of the six new combinations (wf-0082).
- Priest racial-style spells return in reworked form (wf-0101, secondary).
What will feel familiar:
- Two healing trees and a shadow DPS tree — the structure you remember (wf-0104).
- Prayer of Mending still bounces; Penance still channels (wf-0113).

Your Rogue delta: Wrath of the Lich King (2008-2010) → Forever
Mutilate anchors Assassination, you can learn 1H axes, and poisons now coexist with temporary weapon enchants instead of fighting them (wf-0113).
WotLK's Rogue was the duel-and-gank specialist; Forever keeps that and removes friction (poisons vs. enchants) instead of adding systems (wf-0113) — deliberately un-modernized like every class (wf-0105).
What will surprise you:
- For a PvP-ruleset guild like Rise, the Rogue's Forever pitch is unchanged and honest: contested territory on PvP is 'almost always at risk' — your habitat (wf-0163).
What will feel familiar:
- Energy, combo points, poisons: the chassis is the one you learned (wf-0113).
- Stealth picks the fight — nothing about that fantasy changed hands.

Your Shaman delta: Wrath of the Lich King (2008-2010) → Forever
Every Shaman tree ends in a brand-new 31-point talent — Lava Burst, Riptide, Rage of the Farseer — plus totem-call quality-of-life spells (wf-0113).
WotLK Alliance Shamans were Draenei; Forever has no Draenei and no Blood Elves (wf-0089) — the Alliance Shaman is a DWARF (wf-0080), and Horde Shamans add the Skyborne to the classic trio (wf-0087). The totem fantasy stays; the faces change completely.
What will surprise you:
- If you were an Alliance Shaman in WotLK, your race is gone and your class wears a beard now: Dwarf is the ONLY Alliance Shaman (wf-0080).
- Enhancement gets a named capstone (Rage of the Farseer) instead of being the totem-twist spec (wf-0113).
What will feel familiar:
- Totems, shocks, and the three-way Elemental/Enhancement/Restoration split (wf-0113).
- Still the only class listed as both melee and caster DPS (wf-0104).

Your Warlock delta: Wrath of the Lich King (2008-2010) → Forever
Curses gain Banes, and a Bane and a Curse can sit on the same target at once (wf-0114) — your debuff game has two layers now.
WotLK's Warlock juggled one curse per target as a hard choice; Forever keeps the choice but stacks a Bane on top (wf-0114) — same dark fantasy, one more lever.
What will surprise you:
- Trolls can be Warlocks — one of the six new combinations (wf-0088).
What will feel familiar:

Curses gain Banes, and a Bane and a Curse can sit on the same target at once (wf-0114) — your debuff game has two layers now.
Level 60 is the cap — and there is no planned increase, no level scaling, no flying (wf-0006).
There is no realm list and no realm choice: Forever is realmless. You pick a ruleset — Normal, PvP, RP or RP-PvP (wf-0067).

Your Warrior delta: Wrath of the Lich King (2008-2010) → Forever
Tactical Mastery is baseline and the weapon-specialization talents are gone (wf-0114) — the stance dance no longer costs you five points before it starts working.
WotLK's Warrior was three specializations arguing over one rage bar; Forever keeps the argument and the rage, and removes the stance-swap talent tax (wf-0114) — a deliberately un-modernized chassis (wf-0105).
What will surprise you:
- Dual spec at 40 means your Protection main keeps a real Fury/Arms off-spec — at a price nobody has published yet (wf-0109, wf-0110 UNKNOWN).
What will feel familiar:
- Arms, Fury, Protection and the stance bar — the skeleton is WotLK's (wf-0104).
- The default tank of the game is still you (wf-0104).

How to read a brief
Every row carries its sources. Forever-side claims cite the admitted database by fact ID, with the tier the database itself assigns. Era-side claims are labeled era knowledge — general knowledge of the game you left, never dressed up as a Forever fact. And the last section of every brief is the honest one: what nobody knows yet, including us — dual-spec cost, the respec curve, final talent numbers. Four eras are still marked coming: their briefs are not written, and this page would rather show you the stub than invent the content.
Come back to a hall, not a void.
The delta is smaller with people who have already crossed it. Rise is full of WotLK veterans relearning the same systems — the brief gets you current, the guild gets you grouped.
