Name reservation, explained.
For a few days, pack owners can lock in up to three first-and-last name combinations before the realms open. The rules are short, strict, and — in one famous case — buggy. Here is all of it.

The rules, in order
The window
October 27 to November 3, 2026. Regional openings were staggered (Europe first, then North America; Korea and Taiwan on Oct 28), but the close is the close: after Nov 3, every unreserved combination is first come, first served. (Fact wf-0033)
Who qualifies
Owners of the Heroic, Epic, Collection or Collector's Edition packs, on the specific account they will play. Beta access alone does not qualify; a subscription alone does not qualify. The same pack ownership is what unlocks the Skyborne race. (Facts wf-0034, wf-0092)
How many
Three characters total across all rulesets — not three per ruleset. The restriction exists only during reservation; the post-launch character cap is, separately, unannounced. (Facts wf-0035, wf-0041)
What uniqueness means
First name plus surname, as a combination, unique per region. Someone else's first name is available to you; their exact combination is not. A reserved character identity — full name plus created character — is the one thing that carries to launch. Beta characters, names, guilds and gold were wiped and confer nothing. What reserving does not do
It does not let you play early. Reservation is character creation only; play begins November 4 for everyone at the same global moment. (Facts wf-0036, wf-0037 — reports resolved in Blizzard's favor)
The filter bug
Blizzard's restricted-name filter was over-strict during reservation week and blocked legitimate names — the example that made the forums was names containing “c-o-n”. Community Manager Kaivax acknowledged it; a fix shipped with realm restarts. If your name was rejected, retry before you rename. (Fact wf-0218)
Now go and find the name
The Name-Reservation Helper generates combinations in five Horde flavors, shortlists your favorites into a copyable list, and repeats the one honest warning: no tool can check whether a combination is already taken, because Blizzard publishes no way to check. Generate three deep, reserve in order.
